i do understand it's not That Easy to just make a fedi server, considering you need to not only put up with... uh, literally everything about making a fedi server (especially in this space, where you have to defederate every single instance that either wants to kill you, or wants to "support" you with child abuse promoters)
but i'd say there's gotta be a few people out here who definitely have the capability of doing all this... but just, aren't, because they don't feel any motivation to.
i got my spark of motivation when aethy threatened to shut down, of course it turns out they didn't and i'm very glad it didn't, but i still plan on running this instance for the foreseeable future. me purposefully ensuring this remains a small instance is a big contributing factor for this, it'd be a nightmare to manage this instance otherwise.
so if we had a lot more people running smaller instances, even if it's just for their friends and nobody else, that'd be fantastic.

especially when it's basically the equivalent of those weirdo nazifurs. like... they do realize they're not gonna survive their "ideal" world, right? they're gonna be on the chopping block after the Radical Liberals get eliminated .-.
it gets upsetting and frustrating seeing my friends go through the same cycle i did when they reveal to the world they like lolisho/cub art.
the public callouts, the ousting from friend groups, the torrential amount of hate and shit they get flung their way, until ultimately everyone forgets them and move on to their next thing to have unjustified outrage for.
i've seen it happen so much, and it always hurts, seeing how they go through every. last. bit. that i've went through.
the backstabbing and betrayal is something that leaves permanent scars in you, you never know who the fuck to trust unless they are explicitly into the stuff as well. someone can claim they'll support you... then turn around and backstab you when it turns out you're an inconvenience, or when their mind Just Gets Changed by an anti.
there's a reason people either keep their identities split or they decide to just go full-on in and abandon any attempt to reach people who aren't fully into this stuff; people force our hands. people constantly attempt to make sure there's no wiggle room, by maliciously destroying people's lives by ousting people who dare have a world view that doesn't perfectly align with theirs.
