@kittyseekingmartyrdom Distance and lack of financial ability to just move in together, often. Alternatively, living somewhere that same sex marriage isn't legal yet (and/or one of them being trans).
And then some folks just don't really like that whole matter of marriage itself and don't see the tax filing status as worthwhile.
